Marie Miller
Marie Miller’s love of rug hooking began in 1985, when she successfully completed a beginner piece in fine shading, entered the piece in an Ontario Hooking Craft Guild event and received a second place award. This fascination and intrigue with this art form sparked her interest to learn more.
After completing a two year program, Marie became a rug hooking instructor. She has been teaching since the early 1990’s and has taught a number of workshops around Ontario, including the Haliburton School of the Arts. In 2000 she taught in Calgary and at the Museum of Textiles in Toronto. To promote her love of the art, Marie continues to teach beginner and advanced students twice a week at her home in Ajax and weekly at the Oshawa Senior Center. She has been President of the OHCG and is currently the Exhibitions Convener. As an active member of the Teacher’s Branch, Marie has taught in the committee that instructs students to become future teachers since 1990.
She also develops a number of her own patterns for students to get ‘hooked’ on, so they can enjoy this fascinating, traditional art form. Her areas of interests include shading, dyeing, primitives, sheep and angels.
Class Capsule
“Ewe’ll get Hooked on Sheep”
Students are encouraged to keep the pattern small. The sheep can be simply hooked or realistic, fine cut or wide cut. Students will be encouraged to use fleece, roving, alpaca, yarn and some synthetic yarns where applicable. Stress will be on getting the facial details done in class. A pillow sized project would be perfect for the two day workshop.
